The Noongar Boodjar Language Centre provides opportunities for easy access to resources for everyone to learn and engage with the Noongar language. To learn a little about the language, check out the Language section on this website.

Language and Culture Workshops

Noongar Boodjar Language Centre offers workshops. Detailed information about these workshops can be found below. Workshops include:

1. Learn Basic Noongar- 5 weeks x 2 hours a week
2. Cultural Competencies Training (Cultural Awareness Training)- 6 hour session
3. Teacher PD: Introduction to the Noongar Language- 3 hour session
4. Noongar Kinship- 6 hour session
5. Noongar Cultural Mapping- 6 hour session

1. Learn Basic Noongar

Using a master and apprentice learning framework, this fun and highly interactive course is a 5-week course of 2 hours per week, providing an introduction and cultural emersion experience into the Noongar language. The aim is to develop listening and speaking skills in a safe and supportive environment.

All lessons a based on listening and speaking in single words and short phrases with visual aids and actions to help the apprentice to understand what is said.

Participants will develop the competency to engage in basic Noongar conversation. Each person who completes the 5 week course will receive a participation certificate. Participants will receive a ‘Learn some Noongar’ book as part of the course fee.

Course 1 begins: Tuesday 7th February 2017 6-8pm at Bunbury
Course 2 begins: Tuesday 27th June 2017 10-12 midday at Bunbury
Course 3 begins: Wednesday 1st November 2017 6-8pm at Bunbury

2. Cultural Competency Training (Cultural Awareness Training +)

A 6-hour workshop based on developing cultural competencies and the opportunity to explore the perceptions, beliefs, history, strategies and identity related to Noongar culture and language.

The workshop will provide participants with essential knowledge and skills to successfully work in a cross-cultural environment. Participants will acknowledge the past, reconcile the present and feel empowered to walk with Noongar people together into the future.

Cultural Competencies training in 2017 will be held on:

Thursday 6th April – in Bunbury
Thursday 11th May – in Perth
Thursday 8th June – in Bunbury
Thursday 6th July – in Bunbury

Wednesday 6th September – in Bunbury
Thursday 5th October – in Bunbury
Tuesday 7th November – in Perth


3. Teacher PD: Introduction to Noongar Language

An introduction to the Noongar language phonemic system, morphology and grammar with a strategic focus on language competencies, meta language development and linguist competences.

Educators will develop a Noongar linguistic competency framework which will provide a meta cognitive approach to the Noongar language.

Teacher PD: Introduction to Noongar Language sessions will run on these dates:

1. Wednesday 1st February – Bunbury
2. Monday 24th April – Perth
3. Mond 17th July – Bunbury
4. Monday 9th October – Bunbury

Cost $200 per person + GST
3 hour course
Maximum 20 people per session

4. Noongar Kinship Course

This 6 hour course will skill Noongar people to explore their family background to obtain kinship information, work out their clan associations, dialect associations, moiety and skin group. Specific information will be provided to enable each participant to work on their own family associations.

People of non-Noongar heritage are welcome to attend the course as well to learn about the Noongar kinship structure and systems.

The course is ideal for people who wish to deepen their personal and family understanding of their place in the Noongar kinship system, clan and moiety.

The course costs includes all resources and materials, morning tea and lunch. Course presenter is Denise Smith-Ali.

Cost $200 per person + GST
6 hour course
Maximum 10 people per session

5. Noongar Cultural Mapping

This course will skill people to undertake cultural mapping of locations of Noongar significance. The training will skill you to study a location to uncover and document the stories, people, language, cultural significance, sites, artefacts, dreaming and Noongar heritage associated with that location.

If you’ve ever wanted a way to record heritage about a site, this is the course for you. The course is open to all members of the public.

The course fee includes all resources, morning tea and lunch. The course will be delivered by linguist Denise Smith-Ali in a hands-on way that will get participants working on cultural mapping of an actual site.

Cost $200 per person + GST
6 hour course
Maximum 10 people per session
