Kaniyang is a clan of the Noongar Nation

of the southwest of Western Australian

Southwest. The clan’s area is situated on

the upper Blackwood River east to a line

joining Katanning, Tambellup, Cranbrook

and Tenterden; at Kojonup, Collie, Qualeup,

Donnybrook, Greenbushes, Bridgetown

through to the headwaters of Warren and

Frankland rivers, the south bank of Collie

River to Collie and west to the coast as far as

Harvey.

“The Blackwood River starts at the

Moordiyarap Lake and runs into Frankland

River then into the Blackwood River and into

the ocean at Augusta”. Angus Wallam 2006

Kaniyang people speak the southwestern

dialect, Kongal-marawar, of the Noongar

language. The people are mostly non-fluent

speakers who have a partial or passive

understanding of the language.

Sporadic language recording and analysis

was undertaken by pastoralists and linguists

in years gone by. However, further research

continues to retrieve and develop a substantial

database of the language and all clans of the

Southwest. A recent publication in 2009 was

based around the Blackwood River in the

form of a Dreamtime Story. Further research

continues to retrieve and develop a substantial

database of the language and all clans of the

Southwest.

Kaniyang’s AIATSIS code is W4.
